You’re hungry. It’s Sunday afternoon; you’ve just woken up after a late night or early morning and you need to eat off a wicked headache and put something in your somersaulting stomach. What better choice than something doughy and cheesy? Pizza – possibly the greatest hangover or comfort food for most Westerners. But you’re fed up with Hangzhou’s seemingly infinite Pizza Huts. You need a pizza without shrimp, corn or green peas all over it, but one with loads of good cheese and maybe even some tomato sauce under it so you feel a little healthy when you burn your tongue wolfing down some really good pizza.

Or maybe you really like pizza for dinner before you go out. Or perhaps you like to bracket your wild nights with pizza and line your stomach with cheese before and after. Whatever the case, Hangzhou’s got you covered with these great pizza places.

Angelo’s
Angelo’s is a newcomer on the scene here in Hangzhou, but since its winter opening in 201, the place has become a regular haunt for many Westerners seeking American or Italian classics at prices that might surprise given the quality of the food. While the sandwiches, pastas and steaks are all good choices, Angelo’s really shines with their unique takes on the classic Italian pie. You’ll find thin crust classics like the margherita, but you could be more adventurous and try the fusion of East and West in the Beijing duck pizza. You also won’t go wrong with a curry chicken pizza.  Angelo’s has a very New York feel from the way the steaks are done to the “NY” Pepperoni pizza and prints of famous photos of the big apple. Pizza will run you from about 60 RMB to 100 RMB depending of the pizza and size you order. Angelo’s has a great and reasonably priced wine selection to round out your meal; if you can’t figure out the wine list, somebody will be around to offer a recommendation. It’s a little hard to find the first time but you can always call and ask for directions.

Eudora Station
This is another place where you just can’t go wrong with whatever your order. Eudora Station is part bar, part New York style restaurant and it plays both parts exceptionally. Located on leafy Nanshan Road next the lake and across from the China Academy of Art, you can’t complain about the location. The interior is equally beautiful with natural wood accents and bar-high tables – which are a bit of a pain to climb in and out of unless you’re eight feet tall – and the gleaming open kitchen on the first floor. If you want a quieter place to wolf down some great thin-crust pizza you can head up to the comfy second floor. Speaking of pizza, you’ll mostly find New York style pizza here. Even the margarita pizza – and let’s call it what it is, a cheese pizza – will hit the spot for the pickiest pizza-eaters. Expect to pay around 60 RMB at least per person for the Western atmosphere but look to save some dough (sorry for the pun) on their coffee break and happy hour specials.

Due Forni
Down the street from Eudora Station, tucked away in the bamboo forest of Xihu Tiandi, near the Costa coffee, you’ll find the Italian restaurant Due Forni. The décor is sleek, modern and dark, and due to the walls of the place being entirely glass – presumably to allow you to better appreciate the environment around you – it feels kind of like an enormous terrarium where you can peer in and watch people chew. However, the chewing here is good with what they call Roman-style pizza. Classic pizzas include the parma ham and arugula pizza, which comes with shaved parmesan on top.  It’s a bit pricey at over 100 RMB for most of the pizzas, but what can you expect from a place across the street from a Porsche dealership?

Buona
Boy is this place a little gem; what looks like another pork-floss pastry shop on Wensan Lu is actually a good coffee and pizza place in disguise. Buona has two locations in Hangzhou: one on Wensan Lu and one downtown on Yan’an Lu near Wushan Square, and both places have pizza that definitely won’t disappoint. Pizza at Buona usually comes by the slice, two of which will fill the hungriest eaters (although I’ve heard you can order a 50 cm pizza). The pepperoni or sausage pizzas are good and they have veggie options for the non-carnivores in the crowd. A slice costs less than 20 RMB, making this a great budget option. They also serve good smoothies and regularly have baguettes unless I’ve already bought them all for the day. While pizza may not be as fresh as some of the above places, it has them all beat on price. Delivery is available most days for the couch potatoes or busy workers.
