It’s easy to let inner city pressure get the best of you in Guangzhou, unless you know where to find a quality massage, that is. Don’t settle for just any back-alley massage parlor; let a muscle relaxation professional work you over and you won’t regret the extra investment. Here are four recommendations for a top quality massage in Guangzhou.
1) Spelland Spa (Dongshan location)View In Map
Water is the theme at Spelland Spa, with hydrotherapy pools to soothe your cares away at every turn. Spelland also boasts a women’s only therapy area, and foreign personnel to serve foreign guests. For just 68 RMB, you can enjoy back scraping, milk/honey/salt baths, back treatment, foot massage, and cupping. For 298 RMB, you can also get a Hong Kong, Japanese, or Thai massage. Spelland Spa also has a mini movie theater, an internet café, a soccer bar, pool table, ping-pong table, and reading area to keep you entertained. Also try the buffet for 40 RMB per person.
Add: Spelland Spa, 78 Caiyuan Dong Lu (near Dongshan People’s Hospital), Zhongshan Er Lu, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou
Tel: 020 3762 0288; 3762 0988
Opening hours: 24 hours
Getting there: take subway line 1 to Dongshankou (东山口站), exit A
2) South America Grand Hotel Fitness Club (Binjiang Xi Lu location)View In Map
Inside the South America Grand Hotel you’ll find a high-quality fitness club with all the amenities of a proper health spa: bath house, sauna, and dining options. Try the Thai massage for 350 RMB, which also includes sauna access—a steal considering sauna use is normally 200 RMB by itself. If you remember to pay before 18:00 you can enjoy a 20% discount (though there is still a 10% service fee). Enjoy barbequed oysters, duck, steak, and sushi at the buffet. There’s also a free gym, ping-pong tables, and Go tables, though you’ll have to pay for internet use, mahjong, and massages.

3) Fu Yuan TangView In Map
Fu Yuan Tang is a trusted name in Chinese massage arts, with locations all over China. Get a therapeutic foot massage for 109 RMB, or a traditional Chinese body massage for 129 RMB, which lasts about an hour. Fu Yuan Tang is also nice because the staff won’t try to push any promotions or membership cards on you, unlike a lot of other chains.

4) Guchun Thai Massage CenterView In Map
Guchun Thai Massage Center offers just what it advertises: using imported Thai massage oils and medicines. The massage area on the second floor is somewhat open, with only bamboo curtains separating you from the other patrons, so if you absolutely must have a room to yourself then this isn’t the place for you. Besides genuine Thai massages, you can also get a Chinese traditional massage from a blind masseuse. Thai massages last about an hour and cost 118 RMB. Availability of Thai masseuses is limited, so be sure to call ahead to book one if you’re looking for the full Thai experience.

SPELLAND SPA:: I liked this place a lot. The only thing I would complain about is the large pool they show in all their advertisements are actually restricted for the men only. The women's is not that great at all. Functional, but no comparison to the huge one that the guys are privvy to. Everything's all included for 268rmb when we went (August/September). Maybe the prices have gone up. But includes the 90 minute massage in whatever your choice, plus use of all the saunas, dry/wet, small pool, extra services like the 68rmb milk/honey or salt scrubs were all in the women's (and men's) private areas. The other drawback is that they mention there are English speaking attendants there, but both times I was there, there weren't any. Disappointing. The buffets were awesome. We went at 6 pm, had a dinner, then chilled watching some movies and some got extra services like head/shoulder massage or ala carte menu services can be charged to your bracelet. We got a later massage at 11pm after the movie and was done by 1 am and we planned to do an overnight there but all the seats were occupied and we resorted to sleeping in the theater room on the lounge chairs (which didn't recline far enough for comfort compared to the individual loungers available) Plus we had to contend with a snorer.....BOO. Only 1 snorer....and he was behind me! The next morning we had a breakfast and then did more sauna before showering and leaving. I paid only about 350rmb including the 15% surcharge (or 10%)? Luxurious. The next time I go, I will plan better.....do saunas/massage, then dinner( only at 7-9), then entertainment, then sleep on your preferred area. Must save your seat somehow though. :)
