Tantalizing Thai Cuisine in Beijing

Tantalizing Thai Cuisine in Beijing

As winter begins to tighten its grip on the capital there's no better way to fight the chill than by “chillying” up with some spicy Asian cuisine. We've rounded up some of the best Thai restaurants in Beijing.

The name describes the decor with astounding accuracy; everything is...well just very purple, although there is some imperial Emperor yellow thrown in for variety. This is really one of the best Thai restaurants in town in all respects. The Satay Gai is sumptuously tender and the Thai yellow beef curry is highly recommended. Service is generally good and the mood and ambience is intimate and tranquil (depending on your fellow eaters of course). The space also features free wireless internet and a small library which are popular during the afternoons.

Serve the people View In Map
Set in the heart of Sanlitun’s diplomatic quarter this restaurant is always popular with the expatriate crowd. Although the food is not quite up to Purple Haze's standards, the summer terrace and service with a smile makes up for it. The pad Thai is worth a try as well as the spicy red beef curry, although make sure you have plenty of rice to soak up the nose-run inducing spicy chilly broth. Be sure to book ahead to guarantee your spot.

The sculpted elephants and reclining Buddha's make for a unique, if slightly tacky dining experience. They have gone to a lot of effort with the décor, including fish filled mini aquariums, which in the end creates a very warm and colourful environment. With three Thai chefs and Thai wait staff the food is excellently executed. Pad Thai and Satay are both excellent and the Thai green curry is just delicious. They also serve freshly squeezed fruit juices which are a perfect accompaniment to the spice infused Thai dishes.

Patara View In Map
Boasting branches in some of the world’s most culturally rich capitals, this chain now has a firm foothold in Beijing. Set on the 6th floor of Jinbao Place where the likes of Gucci, Burberry and Canelli are the norm, you get a sense of who this place is catering to. Their current promotion offers a 100 RMB voucher for every 1000 RMB spent; hardly worth it one might think, but the food is exceptional, offering set menus starting at 280 RMB per person. There is also a separate vegetarian menu and a whole range of personally handcrafted cocktails. Check the web-site for further details.

Situated in Gongti clubbers paradise and offering cocktails to die for, this is one place that has got it right. Although this is a much more affordable place than the aforementioned Patara, there is not a marked drop in food quality. The shrimp/chicken/eel Thai-style kebabs (49 RMB) are jaw-droopingly good. Service is generally attentive, although this may vary depending on the time of your dining. The menu is quite varied and offers non Thai dishes as well, so be sure to double check the menu before ordering.
