Reasons to Visit Nan Ao Island
Shantou’s Nan Ao Island (汕头南澳岛) is the peak of an undersea mountain dotted with beautiful windmills. The scenery is composed of ancient towns and eye-catching seascapes, and Nan Ao Island has an ancient tradition of story-telling, as well as historic buildings. Nan Ao Island’s bay is composed of fine sand and gently sloping beaches. The surrounding seawater is clean and clear, and contains medium levels of salt. It is a natural bathing place and is one of Guangdong Province’s Grade A beaches. Moreover, Huanghua Shan’s National Forest Park is also called “Nature’s Botanical Park,” while the Islands’ nature reserve is referred to as “Migratory Birds’ Paradise.” Then there’s the island’s wind energy base, and the ancient commander-in-chief mansion, the ancient Southern Song well, the ancient ruins of the Taizi building, and over 50 ancient cultural relics and historical sites as well as 30 temples.

Be Sure to See
Don’t miss the legendary Southern Song well on Nan Ao Island. It is rumored that the well harkens back to the last years of the Song dynasty. Although the ancient well is located only ten meters from the sea, its waters are perpetually clear and taste almost sweet.

Geographic location
Nan Ao Island is located on the seaward side of East Guangdong, in the center of Kaohsiung, Xiamen and Hong Kong Harbor.

Transport
Take an express train from the Luohu Bus Station (罗湖汽车站) to Shantou (汕头). Then head to the Chenghai Laiwu Port (澄海莱芜码头, a taxi from Shantou to Chenghai Laiwu port costs approximately 50-70 yuan, while a bus costs 10 yuan). The ferry from Chenghai Laiwu to Nan Ao departs from 8am to 6pm, with a ferry crossing every two hours. The journey time takes about 35 minutes and the entry price is 20 yuan per person.

Accommodation
Hotels are plentiful at Qing Ao Bay area and prices range from 200-500 yuan. It’s also possible to rent a tent for around 100 yuan per night.
