Weekday Pool Tournaments, Beer Pong, and Trivia in Shanghai – Oh My!
By Andrea Scarlatelli , eChinacities.com

There’s never a lack of places to go or things to see here in Shanghai – on almost every night of the week (and certainly the weekend), you’re bound to find a drink special here or there to ward off the workweek blues. But for those of you who don’t just want to sit and drink (I’m told there are a few) and want something a little more active, the pool tournaments, beer pong championships and trivia nights that are going on almost every night of the workweek should be right up your alley.

Monday:

What: Mind Over Matter (Trivia)
Where: Bulldog Shanghai (see venue listing below for details)
When: Every Monday, 21:30 - 00: 30
Why: Because who doesn’t like to show off how smart they are? Form a team with friends (up to six) and try your best to answer questions in categories from music, literature, geography, and more. Watch out for the Jeopardy question at the end, where you can bet all, some, or none of your points – it’s a doozy!
Cost: Free
Prize: First place takes home 1,000 RMB Bulldog drink voucher; Second place gets a bottle of sparkling wine.

What: 8 Ball Tournament
Where: Wunderbar (see venue listing below for details)
When: Every Monday, 21:00
Why: Because there’s no better way to start off the week than banging some balls together.
Cost: Free
Prize: First place takes home 100 RMB Wunderbar food/drink voucher.

Tuesday:

What: Foosball Tournament
Where: Wunderbar (see venue listing below for details)
When: Every Tuesday, 20:00
Why: Taking over the foosball tournament crowd since Windows Scoreboard closed down, this is now the place to test your skills.
Cost: Free
Prize: First place takes home 1,000 RMB Wunderbar food/drink voucher.

Wednesday:

What: Sink It Drink It (Beer Pong)
Where: Bulldog Shanghai (see venue listing below for details)
When: Every Wednesday, 22:00
Why: Do you really need a reason for an all-you-can-drink beer competition? Relive your college days and show what you really learned in those four years at university. Warning: the competition can get fierce. Get there early and play as much as you can – the team who’s won the most games by the end of the night gets the prize!
Cost: 80 RMB for men, 60 RMB for women gets you all-you-can-drink beer and house spirits from 21:00 till midnight, and includes your entry fee for the beer pong tournament.
Prize: First place gets a bottle of J&B scotch.

What: 8 Ball Double Elimination Tourney
Where: The Spot (see venue listing below for details)
When: Every Wednesday, 20: 00
Why: Nothing’s better for getting over that midweek slump than getting competitive with a bunch of pool sharks.
Cost: Free
Prize: First place takes home a 300 RMB The Spot food/drink voucher (valid for one week).

Thursday:

What: Beer Pong Championships
Where: I Love Shanghai (see venue listing below for details)
When: Every Thursday, 20:00-02:00
Why: Where Shanghai beer pong was born, the original tournament still draws the crowds. Be prepared for a rowdy bunch and a lot of heckling. Be prepared to stay late – the team with the most victories by the end of the night gets the prize!
Cost: 50 RMB gets you a Carlsberg pitcher buy-in, with winners staying on for free.
Prize: First place gets two bottles of Smirnoff vodka.

What: Trivia Night
Where: Southern Belle (see venue listing below for details)
When: Every Thursday, 20:30-23:00
Why: Because you’re a smarty pants, that’s why. Five rounds full of current affairs, science, mythology, and lots more are made to test your knowledge.
Cost: Free
Prize: Varies week to week for the top three teams.

What: Trivia Night
Where: Half (see venue listing below for details)
When: Every Thursday, 7:30pm-9:00pm
Why: Because it’s a different spin on the usual trivia night format. Teams are formed only when it’s determined how many people are playing. The group’s then divided into two teams, each playing the other half (get it?! get it?!). Questions are asked in both English and Chinese, which definitely widens the playing field.
Cost: Free if you spend at least 20 RMB on drinks.
Prize: First place team gets a 100 RMB bar tab.
