Shanghai Thanksgiving Round Up 2012: Dining Out & DIY Options
By Andrea Scarlatelli , eChinacities.com

Thanksgiving is almost upon us and, although it's technically an American holiday, this year it seems like everyone's getting in on the fun. And why not? The holiday, which falls on November 22 this year, presents the perfect chance to spend time with friends and family, give thanks for all our blessings, and, of course, eat some amazing food. There are plenty of options, whether you plan to dine out this year or try a more do-it-yourself approach. Read on for some of the best options around Shanghai, including both old favorites and some places that are new to the Thanksgiving arena.

Dine Out

1) Boxing Cat BreweryView In Map

One of the most dependently delicious (and popular!) options in Shanghai, Boxing Cat Brewery is once again hosting their "Low Country Thanksgiving" dinner with seatings at 17:30 and 20:30. This year, you'll find butter roasted turkey with "all the trimmings," plus mustard ham, brown sugar glazed ham, Andouille sausage croissant dressing, green bean casserole, cornbread pudding, pumpkin pie, and whatever else the chef feels like whipping up that day! The price is 400 RMB per adult (100 RMB per child under twelve years of age) and includes all you can drink beer, house wine, and soft drinks. This deal is good for all the Boxing Cat locations, so pick your favorite and make sure you call ahead to make a reservation.

2) MadisonView In Map

If you're feeling a bit adventurous this year and don't mind going more upscale, Madison's "Thanksgiving Tasting Menu" should be a real treat. Headed by the estimable Austin Hu (voted this year's "Favorite Chef" in the "That's Shanghai" Reader's Choice Awards), 598 RMB gets you one glass of sparkling wine or homemade apple cider plus a multi-course menu with: Truffled pumpkin soup, pepitas with parmesan frico, winter salad, blackened prawns with root vegetables and charred lemon vinaigrette, sea bream broccolini with white beans and chorizo, butter poached turkey breast, sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts, cranberry gastrique, turducken roll foiegras, polenta, truffled gravy, cranberry compote, pumpkin tart brulee with holiday spice and sour cream ice cream. So yeah, should be a lot of good food with a non-traditional twist! Call ahead to book your reservation time.

3) Shook!View In Map

This Swatch Art Peace Hotel-based restaurant has been getting quite a lot of press lately, and their Thanksgiving meal should keep the hype going. This one will be ideal for those who aren't looking to eat till they pop (if there are any people like that on Thanksgiving!) because the offerings are a bit more modest in both price (228 RMB per person) and the number of courses (three). Start with an organic garden salad, then follow up with turkey and "all the fixings" before finishing up with a slow-baked pumpkin cheesecake with graham cracker crust and cinnamon sweet cream. Seatings are anywhere from 18:00 to 22:30, so call ahead to book your spot.
