Shanghai Steak Search: Hunting for the Best Steakhouses in Town
By Jamie Caldwell , eChinacities.com

Finding a decent steak in Shanghai was a virtual impossibility just a decade ago. Now, the city is flush with good cuts of beef, and with rumours circling about the possibility of restrictions on USDA imports being lifted, it looks like 2011 could be the year of the steakhouse for Shanghai. Here’s a round-up of the juiciest in town.

100 Century Avenue

If it’s not the highest steakhouse in the world, it’s up there. Well-marbled cuts of beef can be found on the 91st Floor of 100 Century Avenue’s three-floor venue. There’s a show kitchen in this Park Hyatt restaurant showing off their Western steakhouse, as well as their sushi bar and wok-fried delicacies, but it’s the view of the Jinmao, Bund and Pearl Tower that will keep you fascinated as you dig into your porterhouse.

The JW Marriott’s namesake restaurant, California Grill is on the 40th floor and, unsurprisingly, is known for its grilling. The eatery just got a facelift in 2010, and it has an attached cigar lounge and martini bar that pair perfectly with red meat. The signature dish is the rib-eye and the signature view is a birds-eye of People’s Park. And, as any steak aficionado knows, Caesar Salad is the perfect accompaniment to medium-rare meat, so make sure you hit up their yummy Caesar stand.

Their location in the Swissotel had an on-site “Custom Dry Aging Unit” specially built, and they age their rib eye roast in the machine for 15 days to maximize flavor.

Morton’s

4) Morton’s View In Map

Chicago’s most famous high-end steakhouse opened its doors in Shanghai in 2010, offering prime steaks in mammoth portions. The dinner is a sideshow and feast, with waiters parading raw ingredients in to the dining room before bringing steaks so big even Fred Flintstone would have trouble finishing one. With more than five variations on potatoes on the menu and salads that include entire heads of lettuce, Morton’s is definitely one of the best additions to Shanghai’s steakhouse scene in years.

Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse

6) Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse高峰牛排馆 View In Map

The City Hotel-located steakhouse recalls the meat grilling days of the Old West with its swinging saloon doors, mechanical bull and mesquite-seared steaks. More of a ranch than a restaurant, Pinnacle Peak is the friendliest steakhouse in town, and the prices are pretty budget-friendly too. With jumbo-sized portions and a menu of American classics, it’s not fancy, but darn it if it ain’t good.

The classy sister restaurant of New York Steak & Burger, Shanghai Slims still serves steak, but this time alongside lobster and other seafood in a three-story villa in Sinan Mansions. Chef Adam Levin touts his USDA beef despite the ban on the product, and claims that the restrictions might dissipate relatively soon anyway. The wine selection is hearty and robust, just like the truffle mashed potatoes that come as side dishes to most of the steaks.

A European-style butcher shop steakhouse out in Jinqiao, Yasmine’s knows their meat. They are the purveyors of Shanghai’s biggest burger (a gargantuan two kilo patty and bun), but steak fans should come here for custom cuts and whole roast animals from Butcher Kenneth. While beef still rules here, you can also grab lamb cuts, pork chops and freshly-butchered chicken. They also make head cheese, pate, sausages and more, all in-house.
