See, Swirl, Sniff, Sip, Savor: Shanghai’s Best Wine Bars

See, Swirl, Sniff, Sip, Savor: Shanghai’s Best Wine Bars
By Jamie Caldwell , eChinacities.com

A decade ago, wine bars in Shanghai were non-existent, and most decants of vino were coupled with generous pours of Coke and Sprite in a desperate attempt to mask the plonk that qualified as wine in China. While domestically produced wines can still fall victim to the soft drink method, the wine industry has matured significantly over the past 10 years. It seems like local wine bars are popping up on every street corner today, ready to uncork vintages from Shanxi, New World favorites from South America and Australia and classics with Europe’s old world terroir. We sipped our way through Shanghai’s wine bars to find the 5 best places for a tipple.

1) House of RooseveltView In Map
Located in the 1920s historical landmark Bund 18 building, the House of Roosevelt serves up the largest wine list in Shanghai over five floors. Sip your way up the building with a bistro on the first floor, the city’s largest wine cellar on the second, an exclusive members club on the third, Sky Restaurant and Bar on the eighth and the Rooftop Lounge on the ninth floor offering gorgeous Bund views. With 2,500 labels and 20,000 bottles of wine in its staggering 1,100 sqm cellar, House of Roosevelt is a destination of the city’s oenophiles, but unless you have RMB 180,000 to burn, don’t expect access to the third floor.

2) Enoterra/Enoteca 依诺田珑 View In Map
The first wine bar to crack Shanghai’s nightlife scene, Enoterra (previously known as Enoteca, but the name switch hasn’t really caught on yet) has been winning loyal followers around the city since opening the Anfu Lu branch in 2006. Now with three locations on both sides of the Huangpu, this boutique wine bar has cemented its reputation for quality, not to mention cozy atmosphere, affordable wines and one of the city’s best brunches. Part lounge, part retail space, fans of this established wine bar can grab their vino to go, or enjoy it in the bar paired with a selection of tapas.

Napa Wine Bar & Kitchen

3)  Napa Wine Bar & Kitchen 藏酒轩 View In Map
As the name suggests, Napa puts wine before food at the romantic three-story villa it calls home. A sommelier with an encyclopedic knowledge of wine is ready with recommendations, including a pairing menu based on your tastes, and Chef Michael Ona pours the wine into his cooking, with dishes featuring Merlot dressing, Champagne vinaigrette and Chardonnay braising techniques. Napa shares its space with The Wine Residence, a “wine themed lifestyle destination” from ASC Fine Wines that offers 180 private cellar spaces and an impressive wine list for an annual fee of RMB 25,000. While the clubhouse and cellar will remain stoutly members-only, The Wine Residence is offering wine education to the masses, with a range of diploma classes, for beginners and experts, from the WSET (Wine & Spirits Education Trust) program.

Sommelier-cum-owner Vincent Landais is on hand to write prescriptions for those who need a little diagnosing, and there’s a menu featuring wine bar classics if you have a case of the munchies. Just Grapes, Dagulu

5) Just Grapes  萄醉 View In Map
A wine shop and lounge for the uninitiated, Just Grapes’ best feature is its in-house categorization. Each wine is tagged with a label (in both Chinese and English) that segregates the bottles by grape before classifying the wine by body and taste. Whether you like your wine fresh or smooth, nutty or minerally, they’ve got a bottle with your style sticker. More of an educational tool for rising classes of amateur Chinese wine aficionados, this wine bar is just a fun place to sit back and find out how a rich, grassy wine goes down.
