By Andrea Scarlatelli , eChinacities.com

The warm weather blows in on a balmy wind and suddenly we can’t get enough of the great outdoors! There’s simply no better way to enjoy a gorgeous evening in Shanghai than sitting outside while enjoying a cocktail or two, or perhaps even an entire meal. There is no shortage of rooftop patios in Shanghai, so we’ve decided to uncover the best spots one area at a time. Under the microscope in this edition: The Bund – Shanghai’s ever famous waterfront area and magnet of fine wining and dining.

1) Lost HeavenView In Map
One of the best places to ease your out of town guests into the sometimes perilous world of Chinese cuisine, Lost Heaven on the Bund also happens to have a killer patio. With beautiful views and a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere, you’d be hard pressed to find a better evening hangout. Get started on your vacation early with fruity (but strong!) cocktails served in tiki glasses that will make you almost miss those dog days of summer. If you get hungry, nibble on the upscale Yunnan food that’s earned Lost Heaven its reputation as one of the city’s “must visit” restaurants.

2) Captain’s BarView In Map
When one thinks of the Bund, probably the first word that comes to mind is “expensive.” Alas, it doesn’t always have to be (just most of the time) as Captain’s Bar proves time and time again. Perched atop the infamous Captain’s Hostel, this bar has a small but sufficient rooftop terrace that serves perfectly in warm weather. While drinks are a depressingly average 40 RMB or so, for the Bund area it’s practically a steal! Gaze out over the river and enjoy the majestic lights of Shanghai in a surprisingly cozy corner of downtown. The best part? You’ll get to meet those cool hostel type kids just passing through town which always makes for an eventful evening.

3) CharView In Map
Part of the quirky Hotel Indigo, Char has gained quite the reputation as a steak restaurant (not to mention its infamous selection of sea salt and steak knives). The only thing that rivals the delicious cuts of meat is the breathtaking view of the Bund from its outdoor deck. Decked out in super modern tables and bar stools, this is a great place to come after work or if you’re in the mood for something a bit more upscale than what a typical Saturday night usually calls for. With a completely clear panoramic range of vision, Char has become popular with the business crowd for very good reason.

4) Mr. & Mrs. BundView In Map
Mr. & Mrs. Bund is practically a Shanghai institution, as is its legendary rooftop patio. Dine on their exquisite “modern French” offerings, then get your butt out on that fabulous deck to enjoy an unparalleled view of the Bund. This unique space has the singular distinction of being both completely romantic and hospitable to larger social groups. There’s simply no better spot to enjoy the historic architecture and amazing views of the one of a kind Bund (the restaurant’s 32 different kinds of wine by the glass don’t hurt either…).

5) Bar RougeView In Map
No list of the best rooftop patios in the Bund area would be complete without Bar Rouge. No, for better or for worse, this Shanghai stronghold is here to stay. Here, the outdoor terrace experience is heightened with the bar’s notorious sleek furnishings and extreme, well, French-ness. That means you should expect fashionable interiors, small but expensive cocktails, and music that just won’t quit. It really is hard to top this iconic spot when it comes to views of the Bund and pure atmosphere.
