It may be true that everyone screams for ice cream, but sometimes you want something a little more filling for a sweet treat. Milkshakes are catching on as Shanghai’s restaurants continue to adopt American staples to please Western palates. Dessert foods can be a tricky business, but there are some places that have seemingly mastered the elusive art of proper milkshake making. Read on for some of the best in the city.

1) Big Bamboo
A new offer from the expat community’s favourite sports bar, these milkshakes stick to the basics – but boy are those basics delicious. Choices are chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, with each flavour coming topped with whipped cream, a cherry, and flavored sauce (chocolate sauce for the vanilla and chocolate options; strawberry sauce for the strawberry). It’s a satisfying way to end a meal, especially at a place not particularly known for their dessert options.

2) Bistro Burger
This is perhaps a controversial choice, as the regular milkshakes here are just OK. Bistro Burger makes the list, however, solely for its spiked shakes. The regular ones tend to be thin—with the exception of the Oreo cookie flavour—but the spiked milkshakes are, for whatever reason, enormously better! What could be more decadent? So skip the plain old vanilla, and stick to the alcohol-enhanced varieties. You’ll be glad you did!

3) Munchies
I have to admit right off the bat that this is my personal favourite milkshake place. While I’ve dabbled in their various flavours (which include the classics: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, etc.) over the years, I keep coming back to the chocolate peanut butter milkshake. To. Die. For. Thick, but not so much that you can’t drink it out of a (wide) straw. The blend of sweet chocolate and slightly salty peanut butter is absolutely sinful. It’s the perfect way to end an already calorie-crammed dinner.

4) Gourmet Cafe
Why do hamburger joints do such a bang up job with milkshakes? Whatever the reason, this place arguably has the best milkshakes in the city. The overall consensus is that while all their flavours are delicious (choices include the basics), the chocolate is the way to go. Creamy and rich the way a good milkshake should be, it’s the best accompaniment possible to their fabulous burgers.

5) Carl’s Jr
Just in case you needed another excuse to stop by what is possibly the best American burger import in all of China (ha!), it just so happens that they make some killer milkshakes, too. Watch as your server fills a blender with milk, then adds scoop after scoop of the most delectable ice cream. Then they blend it on high, pour it into your cup, and – voila! – it’s that simple. But it’s the simple-ness of it all that makes it so delicious. It can be quite refreshing (and yummy) to go back to the basics.

6) Kommune
Everyone’s favourite Taikang Lu weekend brunch spot also happens to have the best coffee milkshake around. While they’re more famous for their fishbowl-sized cups of coffee, they use those same coffee beans to liven up their milk and ice cream concoction. If that’s a bit too sweet for your palate, their thick smoothies are also remarkably milkshake-like (minus the cold and the sugar) – I prefer their coffee/banana/chocolate mix.
