China is considering a travel exchange with the US after the Biden administration reduced restrictions for students and professionals wishing to come to the country.

China considers travel exchange with US

Earlier this week, Washington announced that students and professionals from various countries, including China, would now be allowed to enter the US under certain circumstances. Students would be permitted to come to the country 30 days before the start of the new term in August.

It has been more than a year since the Trump administration banned anyone who had been in mainland China 14 days before travel from entering the US. Beijing also imposed strict controls on the entry of foreigners last March, essentially closing its borders in a bid to control the Covid-19 pandemic and stop the spread of imported infections.

In a press briefing yesterday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian welcomed the “positive move” and hinted that China may soon make similar arrangements to ease the path of entry for US students. “China, under the premise of safety, will study and have an overview on the matter of foreign students coming to China, maintain communication with all parties and push for safe and orderly personnel exchanges,” said Zhao.

Chinese news outlet Caixin reported on Wednesday that certain US airlines are preparing to put on more flights between the two countries on the back on the developments. An industry insider said American airlines were now just waiting for approval from China.
