China residents will now be able to travel anywhere in China by train without taking a Covid-19 test first, according to reports. Starting today, a negative nucleic acid test is no longer required when traveling by train to and from any region of China, all of which are now considered low-risk.

The changes were confirmed to the Global Times by a railway authorities customer service officer, who said passengers would just need a green health code to travel on the train system from now on. The Health Times has since reported that certain domestic airports are also implementing the same policy.

All of China’s last remaining medium-risk areas were downgraded to low-risk on February 22 after localized outbreaks in northern China’s Hebei, Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces were brought under control. The mainland has seen no locally-transmitted Covid-19 infections for 29 days, according to official figures.

China’s Covid vaccination program is also being ramped up. More than 52 million doses were administered by February 28, with authorities vowing to inoculate 560 million people, 40% of China’s population, by the end of June.

Despite the positive news, Wang Peiyu, the deputy head of Peking University’s School of Public Health, has warned residents to remain vigilant when traveling. Mask wearing and social distancing should continue to be enforced to prevent any spreading of imported infections, he said.
