Police talked down a man holding a woman hostage with a pair of scissors to her neck at an electronics store on Chendafo Road in Xinchang County, Zhejiang. Police received the 110 call on June 16 at 3 pm and officers arrived at the scene two minutes later.

Officer Yu Dingming arrived on the scene and found a man holding a pair of scissors against a female clerk’s neck. Officer Yu spoke to the main in a calm voice and told him not to do anything rash. Yu told everyone else in the store to leave.

The man with the scissors, Ding, said that he had purchased a tablet at the electronics store for 1,200 RMB and it broke after two days. The store replaced a part, and Ding found that the tablet still did not work. He asked the store for a full refund and was given 800 RMB.

Ding and an employee began to argue about the refund. Ding felt like the employee did not respect him. He picked up a pair of scissors from the store counter and grabbed a female employee.

Officer Yu told Ding that he would help him deal with the matter, but that Ding needed to put the scissors down. Ding did not seem to believe him and gripped the scissors more tightly. Yu pointed to his badge and said, “I am responsible and will help you solve the problem.”

Ding looked slightly reassured. He thought for a few seconds, released the woman and put the scissors down.

The entire process took less than five minutes. A special police team was waiting outside the shop, ready to step in if necessary.

Ding was brought into the police station. Police mediated the issue and the store agreed to refund the Ding the full price of the tablet. However, Ding was sentenced to five days administration detention for his actions.

So the moral of the story, if the clerk is a woman and you're not satisfied, hold a weapon to her throat and yo'll get what you want.

What a stupid thing to say. Five days "administration detention" is hardly a punishment for kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment and aggrivated assault. Good think the cop kept his cool and talked down the assailant. And the "I'm responsible and will help you" line was golden. Instead of taking a hostage, Ding should have called police in the first place. It's sick that this guy thinks a life is worth 400RMB.
