A Beijing man attacked his team leader with a knife after an office dispute.

Chen, 22, worked at a Beijing real-estate company in sales. On the evening of March 18, Chen entered his team leader’s apartment with a stick and a knife after the two had disputed at work. Chen beat Ge, the team leader, and cut his leg with the knife. Ge suffered minor injuries. Chen turned himself into the authorities on March 28.

Chen said in court that two days before the incident, he had been two minutes late for work. He said that when he arrived at the office, he did 10 push-ups to comply with the company’s rules for tardiness. When he was done, Ge told him to do 10 more. “I ignored him, and he scolded me and pinched my neck,” said Chen.

That night, after drinking, Chen decided that he wanted to fight Ge. He picked up a stick from the side of the road, purchased a kitchen knife from a nearly supermarket, and headed to Ge’s apartment. “I stood in front of him for three or four seconds. I thought he was going to apologize to me. But then he stood up. I was afraid he was going to hit me first, so I hit him in the head with the stick,”

Chen said he hit Ge more than 10 times with the stick. Before he left, he head Ge down a cut the side of his head and his leg with the kitchen knife. “I took the kitchen knife to scare him, and did not expect the fight to happen like that. I regret it,” said Chen. Chen said that after the incident he gave Ge 9,000 RMB for his medical bills. Chen is a migrant worker and his parents do not work. His family could not afford any more compensation.

The judge told Chen that Ge’s medical expenses totaled 15,000 RMB. Chen’s mother is in the hospital, and he has not reached a compensation agreement with Ge. The prosecutor recommended that Chen be sentenced ten months to a year and four months in prison.
