Hunan Officials Try to Quell H7N9 Fears with Chicken-Eating Fest

The current H7N9 outbreak has got us all understandably worried, and with 84 cases now confirmed (as of April 18), many people are afraid at even the sight of poultry. To try and quell some of the public concern regarding the virus, Hunan officials recently engaged in a poultry eating fest with 150 employees from the local Animal Husbandry Bureau on April 17.

The officials indulged in a session that saw largely poultry-based food on offer, with fried chicken wings, giblets, and duck soup making up the banquet that required a total of 30 chickens and a whole morning to cook up. The chickens were said to have come from a farm from nearby Yangjiashan.

Bureau Head Yuan Yanwen stated, “There haven’t been any cases of H7N9 yet in Hunan. We should really stop all this panicking.”
