Drunk Taxi-Stealing Frenchman Sentenced to Prison in Shanghai

Around 05:00 on August 10, 2012, a Frenchman named Josephus, who was exiting a bar on Shanghai’s Yueyang Lu, decided to drive himself home…in a taxi that was parked outside the bar. At the time, the taxi driver was not in the vehicle, though had left the keys in the ignition for some reason. Josephus simply opened the door, sat down in the driver’s seat, started the car and drove away.

Soon after, taxi driver Shen realized his car was missing, and hopped in to another taxi, which began pursuit of the vehicle Josephus was driving (calling the police at the same time). During the chase, Josephus ended up colliding with the car that was chasing him, resulting in about 3,000 RMB’s worth of damage.

Police apprehended Josephus and took him to a nearby hospital to get a blood sample, and discovered that his blood-alcohol level was 2.32 mg; well over the legal limit of 0.8 mg.

In November 2012, the case was tried at the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court. Josephus was to be charged with drunk driving, which would mean criminal detention and a subsequent fine.

After pleading guilty, Josephus was sentenced to two months imprisonment for reckless driving, and was fined 2,000 RMB. Although Josephus appealed the ruling, the original sentence was passed at a second trial that was just held at the Shanghai Higher People’s Court.
