Far from the image many foreigners have of Chinese people, especially the Chinese of the past, being prudish and prim and proper, Jin Ping Mei (The Plum in the Golden Vase) tells the story of a 12th century family and the sexual shenanigans that ensue.

A few days ago news in Mainland China was full of stories of a new Hong Kong sequel to last year’s original remake of the first half of the novel. This time reporters who have previewed the movie say that it is even sexier and pushes the boundaries even further than the first installment.

Considered one of the four classic novels of the Ming dynasty, Plum in the Golden Vase sits alongside Dream of the Red Chamber, Water Margin and Journey to the West in high regard in classical Chinese literature.

However, for centuries it was classified as pornographic material and banned officially. The book is nevertheless surreptitiously read by many of the educated class. Only since the Qing Dynasty has it been re-evaluated as literature.

The story contains a surprising number of descriptions of sexual toys and coital techniques, most commonly bondage and S&M that would be considered fetish today, as well as a large amount of bawdy jokes and oblique but still titillating sexual euphemisms. The novel also deals with larger sociological issues, such as the role of women in ancient Chinese society, sexual politics.

The novel describes, in great detail, the downfall of the Ximen household during the years 1111-1127 (during the Northern Song Dynasty). The story centers around Ximen Qing , a corrupt social climber and lustful merchant who is wealthy enough to marry a consort of wives and concubines.

Sina reported how the new Hong Kong sequel has controversially employed three famous Japanese AV girls for the lead female roles and that this has already caused a lot of publicity for the much awaited second half installment of the seductive and sexy production.

However, steeling the lime light of the film, which bears the English title The Forbidden Legend: Sex and Chopsticks, is Hong Kong actress Liang Minyi, who plays the slave Chun Mei of the lead male role, Ximen Qing.

Liang told reporters that several of the quite lengthy sex scenes in the film caused quite a lot of embarrassment while filming, and several of the scenes required her to appear naked. Liang Minyi and on the Japanese AV stars, Kaera, both hope that their hard work is not put to waste, and everyone has high hopes for how the film will do at the box office.

The novel in its traditional form is not openly sold in book shops around China, however just as other traditional novels of a sexual nature (most famously The Pray Mat of Flesh, concerning the sexual exploits of a very energetic young scholar), may not be officially released on the Mainland market, but that’s not to say audiences here won’t be able to access it.
