It’s always been fashionable for women to marry men for their money. For many women, a financially stable man is reliable and trustworthy. However, what’s often less talked about is the growing fashion among the young party crowd for younger guys to date their ‘older sisters’ – women who are older and more financially stable than them. The classic examples being the long lasting romance between Zheng Yuling and Lü Fang and later the famous pop star Wang Fei who took on the care of much younger Xie Tingfeng.

This is good news for the ever growing numbers of Chinese women who are leaving marriage and children until into their 30s. Unlike the 23 year old character Fu Qiufang from the famous 18th century novel Hongloumeng, who was considered far to old to still be unmarried, it is now said that if a woman finds herself over 30 and surrounded within a 500 meter radius by married women, then she is officially shengnü (剩女) ‘left on the shelf’.

A glimmer of hope for these women comes from some of the noticeable changes in the modern Chinese dating scene. For increasing numbers of Chinese men, these ‘older women’ offer an attractive balance. It is common for these slightly older girls to help out around the house, do chores and look after other relatives. Most of the time they even help you cook. Whilst hardly any Chinese girl can cook now, they might at least help out, unlike those young girls who just sit around on their arse and then have the cheek to get angry when they don’t like it.

Furthermore, from statistics taken on Chinese couples, the average age gap between the older woman and younger guy is 3 years, not really that much of a gap.

However, for a lot of Chinese people, the thought of dating an older woman is off putting when it comes to matters of the bedroom. Nevertheless, for me I think it is mainly women who think that. For most men a woman’s sex appeal is nothing to do with her age, but with her experience.

A lot of older girls use their more extensive experience to give themselves that added advantage. The older woman will often be more emotionally mature, and it is traditionally known in China that this means that she’ll often know her way around the bedroom. Unlike younger girls, who normally lie there like rag dolls and don’t join in, older girls will enjoy using every cell in their bodies to bring the guy pleasure.

Of course, from a purely aesthetic outlook, one would assume the younger the better. However, with all the charms, wisdom, experience and warmth that an older woman brings, countless Chinese guys are finding themselves being attracted to the more mature lady.

Whilst it is true that there are still many man who opt for the ‘younger model’ when it comes to dating and finding a wife, they might land themselves a beauty, but end up paying the price as they struggle to support their young wife. On the other hand, increasing numbers of men are remembering that old Chinese saying: ‘with a wife three years your senior, you’re in for a fortune’.
