Zhang Yimou Under Fire for Not Being a Narc

Zhang Yimou Under Fire for Not Being a Narc
Nov 17, 2015 By eChinacities.com

After Chinese pop singer Yin Xiangjie was recently arrested for drug offenses four months after completing a prison sentence for similar crimes, renowned director Zhang Yimou was asked about celebrity drug use in an interview with Xinhua. His answer surprised a number of Netizens.

Zhang said that he has seen a number of actors and actresses smoke marijuana, and that a few have even encouraged him to try ecstasy. “It is a source of inspiration,” he said earnestly.

The Chinese media reminded readers that Chinese narcotics law stipulates that citizens are obligated to report the drug use of others. If ordinary people have this obligation, then a public figure like Zhang Yimou must lead by example.

As of yesterday evening, there were nearly 20,000 online messages on the topic. Zhang’s supporters believe that he spoke a big truth, which took a lot of courage. They said that the currently system of reporting drug usage is merely supplementary and does not tackle the entire problem.

Those who criticized Zhang questioned his ethics and morals. “If he reports all of them, who will be in his movies,” one Netizen asked sarcastically. They said that Zhang’s comments made it seem like he thought that he was above everyone else.

Those who were neutral on the subject said that the controversy may make Zhang wake up and begin reporting those around him using illegal drugs.

Drug phobia has a lot to do with American influence, I see this mentioned almost nowhere. You could have walked down the street in nearly any Asian country 20 years ago with a smoking spliff and no one would have cared or noticed. Today is very much similar to America's "war on drugs".

And if he did "out" them and all those celebrties lost face? And then were forced to do some sort of forced media reeducation, then that would make the world a better place? Surely even the lowest of the bottom feeding Netziens can realize the logic of that... oh, never mind...

All actors/resses should just move the hell out of China. This country is undeserving of any artistic talent.
