Xi'an Travel Tips

The average temperature in Xi’an in September and October is 18-26℃ with sharp temperature drops in the morning and evenings. Visitors coming around this time of the year are advised to bring a couple of long-sleeved items of clothing with them. Temperatures from November to December range from 1-12℃ and usually the air is quite dry; bringing a good moisturizer is advised.

To get to Huashan Mountain takes approximately 2.5 hours from the city, to the Terracotta Warriors one hour, to Ganxian 2.5 hours and to the Yan’an Yellow Emperor Tombs takes 3 hours. Those interested in visiting the Hukou Waterfalls in Yan’an should be advised that a return trip covers a distance of 1100 km. Moreover, the climate at Huashan Mountain is very different to the city, with frequent rain downpours. Bringing a good pair of mountain shoes and waterproof clothing is essential.

Xi’an is home to a large Muslim population – the Hui Minority – and the main congregation area is Huimin Street (Muslim Street) where many Halal restaurants and food vendors can be found. Pork is not served at these restaurants for obvious reasons.

Travelers coming to the city en route to Tibet are required to obtain appropriate paperwork in order to make the trip. Agencies such as travel agencies as well as The Xi'an Deputy of Tibet Tourism can provide such permit in approximately two days:

Xi'an Deputy of Tibet Tourism
Add: 169 Jianshe Xi Lu, Beilin District, Xi’an
地址:西安市碑林区建设西路169号
Tel: 029 8788 5852

Make sure to call in advance to inquire about how long the process is, what type of paper work is required. In many cities, the Deputy requires original passport with a copy of visa and passport, two passport size pictures, form and occupation statement. However, it may differ from city to city.

Train is the economic way to travel. Travelers arriving by train very early in the morning or very late at night should not stay in the train station for too long. During the late evening hours, many thieves hang out in the area. Visitors have reported their bags being slashed.
