Which Countries Do Not Have Diplomatic Relations with China?

Editor's Note: The PRC states it "unswervingly pursues an independent foreign policy of peace. The fundamental goals of this policy are to preserve China's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, create a favorable international environment for China's reform and opening up and modernization construction, maintain world peace and propel common development." While their methods to preserve territorial integrity have been criticized and their ideas about common development are sometimes self-seeking, they have been able to maintain diplomatic relations with most of the world, except for 15 countries. This translated article explains why.

There are 15 countries that have never established diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. These 15 countries have maintained so-called “diplomatic relations” with Taiwan. These countries include Bhutan, the Vatican, Haiti, Dominica, Saint Vincent, the Grenadines, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Paraguay, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Palau, and Swaziland.

Nations that Never Established Ties
Bhutan is a small country in the Himalayas that is known for being secluded from the outside world. Bhutan has also not established international relations with the United States, Russia, and other major countries. India and Bhutan signed a “permanent peace and friendship treaty” in August 1949. In the treaty, Bhutan agreed to accept India’s guidance on its external relations.
Although Bhutan borders China, the two countries have yet to establish diplomatic relations.

China and Bhutan have on-going controversy over territory on the border between the two nations. The two countries are working to resolve their border issues and are currently in talks.
The Vatican is the smallest country in the world, but is the center of the Catholic world.

Currently, the Vatican is Taiwan’s only “ally,” in Europe. China and the Vatican have not established diplomatic religions because of the two nations’ vastly different views on religion.

“Dollar Diplomacy”
Taiwanese authorities used “dollar diplomacy,” to win over small nations in Central America and Africa. In 2002, Taiwanese authorities loaned $35 million to Panama to build a hospital for women and children, $55 million to Haiti in “aid,” $360,000 to Grenada, and $25 million to Paraguay.

Eight countries had previously severed diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. In some cases, Taiwanese authorities “purchased,” diplomatic relations with those nations. The eight countries include Sao Tome, Burkina Faso, Nauru, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Belize, Nicaragua, and Saint Lucia.

In 2002, Nauru and the People’s Republic of China established diplomatic relations. Three years later, in May 2005, Nauru and Taiwan “resumed diplomatic relations,” and Nauru severed relations with the People’s Republic of China.

China established diplomatic ties with Kiribati in June 1985. In November 2003, Kiribati formed
“diplomatic relations” with the Taiwanese authorities. Soon after, Kiribati and the People’s Republic of China broke off diplomatic relations.

Maintaining Trade Relations
Some countries maintain trade relations with China despite a lack of diplomatic relations. In September 1997, the People’s Republic of China established diplomatic relations with Saint Lucia. Saint Lucia established diplomatic relations with the Taiwanese authorities in April 2007, and the People’s Republic of China broke off relations with Saint Lucia in May 2007.

However, China and Saint Lucia have maintained bilateral trade. In 2012, China exported $28 million worth of goods to Saint Lucia, and imported goods worth $120,000.

The PRC knows it is advantageous to buy countries to support it's imperialistic objectives now that it has joined the imperialistic and capitalistic world

For a country as large and as influential as China...It should have diplomatic relations with as many countries (if not all) as possible...And doing its best to combat global poverty and helping the world good...Not warmongering like that dumpy little upstart in N.KOREA...The piece of s***.

heck, in view of 2047 and how uncivilised mainlanders are, even young Hong Kongers are forming political parties stating independence being their goal openly loud and clear, the more anyone knows mainlanders the less one wants to have anything do with them, culturally and politically

So by lending small amounts of money to countries to build hospitals etc, Taiwan is apparently 'buying diplomacy' In that case, why aren't mainland leaders accused of the same thing when they give billions of dollars to Arfican countries for the same purpose?
