Which Cities Have the Best Air in China? How About The Worst Air?

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently announced the new numbers for its urban air pollution database.

The WHO database shows the annual average concentration of PM2.5 in 2,937 global cities. Four cities in China are included of the world’s top 20 most polluted cities. The cities are Xingtai (128 ug / m³), Baoding (126 ug / m³), Shijiazhuang (121 ug / m³), and Handan (112 ug / m³), and all are in Hebei province. Xingtai and Baoding were ranked ninth and tenth globally for their bad air. Hebei’s Hengshui (107 ug / m³) and Tangshan (102 ug / m³) were ranked in the top 50. Beijing (85 ug / m³) is the 56th most polluted city in the world.

The 2,937 cities are located in 103 countries around the world. The database includes the cities’ average annual concentration of PM 2.5 and PM10. 210 cities in China are included in the database. The PM2.5 data was collected in 2014, and the PM10 data was collected in 2013 and 2014.

The cities with the best are in China are Taiwan’s Taitung (11ug / m³), and Hualien (12ug / m³), and Hainan’s Sanya (15 ug / m³).

All 210 Chinese cities exceeded WHO’s recommended guidelines of PM2.5 (10ug / m³ or less). Only Taitung and Hualien met WHO’s standards for PM10 (20ug / m³).
