The Best of Nanjing's Cafés

The Best of Nanjing's Cafés

When it’s time to settle in at a warm place, what else is better than heading to a cafe? The coffee scene in Nanjing is still growing, but already everyone loves their cafes. Nanjing is a great place for students and teachers alike. So, where should you go to enjoy some hot coffee, dive into your newest novel, catch up on a little schoolwork or just people-watch? Here are some of the better places in Nanjing for cups of “joe”, decent breakfasts, tasty deserts and all the things that make cafe-cruising so enjoyable.

Sculpting in Time 雕刻时光咖啡馆View In Map
A favourite for foreigners and Chinese alike, Sculpting in Time is the go-to place for a “cafe feel.” With its large seating area and cosy decor, it is easy to spend a few hours removed from the noisy, bustling streets. Located just across from the main gate of Nanjing University (or Nan Da) it’s a popular spot for students, teachers and anyone else looking for an indoor retreat. And while their menu lacks culinary creativity, nowhere else in Nanjing can you find a better breakfast/brunch menu. Whether it’s brunch, lunch, dinner or desert, their menu will suit all tastes. And for the chocolate lover in all of us, their brownies may be the best in Nanjing. The warm atmosphere is perfect for an afternoon of study, pleasure reading, Internet surfing or chatting with friends.

Soul Mate 索味咖啡View In Map
The next time you are in need of a tasty crepe or a real cup of coffee, the place to go is Soul Mate. Located just off the always-popular Shanghai Lu, Soul Mate is a quaint French-inspired cafe and a must-try for all in Nanjing. With comfy couches and what could be Nanjing’s best coffee, Soul Mate is a great place to spend a lazy afternoon listening to good music and playing games – they have chess, a few board games, UNO cards and plenty of decks of cards to go around. And once you get hungry, their brief-but-tasty menu offers something for everyone. Most recommended, however, are the crepes. Lunch and dinner crepes are pretty good, but their banana crepe with chocolate sauce is a one-of-a-kind. While there are only about six tables in the place, it’s usually not too crowded to get a table.

Skyway’s Bakery & DeliView In Map
Ask anyone who has been in Nanjing for a few years and they will tell you that Skyway’s is a Nanjing staple. Started by a couple from Germany and Sweden (who also own Swede and Kraut), Skyway’s is a hit for foreigners and Chinese alike. With friendly staff and good eats, it is a great place for a quick lunch or for a leisurely cup of coffee. While it lacks the cosiness of other cafes, Skyway’s has a great selection of deserts, imported cheeses and meats. And with the recent closing of the Subway chain restaurants in Nanjing, it is now the best place in town to go for a sandwich. They also make their own bread – Western style bread, not “Chinese” bread – so you can stock up to enjoy at home. Their prices are fairly reasonable, especially considering it is one of the only places to get real, freshly baked bread in Nanjing. And for desert, be sure to try their almond bars or macaroons. These kinds of delectable deserts are another rare find in Nanjing, but done very well at Skyway’s
