In an attempt to combat the recent outbreak of the H7N9 virus that has already claimed nine lives (as of April 10), workers at the Suzhou Zoo have started feeding their birds Radix Isatidis, a herb well known for its medical qualities.
Parrots, pheasants, peacocks, flamingos, ducks, swans and cranes are all being fed the herb, and zookeepers say that they’ll continue to do so for at least the next six months.
The zoo’s resident tigers, lions, and other predators have also been forced to change their diet in the wake of the H7N9 outbreak, with their normal chickens being replaced by beef.
