A Shanghai taxi driver was recently detained after photos of him touching a 14 year old passenger’s thigh were posted online.

On May 30, a young female student named Jingjing took a taxi home from school. Mrs. Tu, her mother, reported that her daughter’s teacher had called home from school that morning because Jingjing had come down with a fever. Mrs. Tu told the teacher to send Jingjing home in a taxi so she could rest.

At 9:45 am, Jingjing got into a taxi to head home in her school uniform. She tried to open the rear door to get into the back seat, but the driver told her that the rear door was broken and that she had to sit in the front. Jingjing got in, and soon feel asleep because of her high fever. When she woke up near her home, she found that the driver’s right hand was on the outside of her left thigh.

Jingjing texted her mother several times and took a picture of the driver’s certification and his hand on her thigh. She sent six messages to her mother describing the harassment.

Jingjing told her mother that she had tried to move sideways, away from the driver, but he continued to grab her thigh. “He saw that she had turned to sit sideways, and he said to her, ‘Ok, Uncle will give you a massage,’” said Mrs. Tu.

That same night, police arrested the taxi driver, Mr. Shi, and he confessed. He was found guilty of indecent behavior and sentenced to 10 days administrative detention. The taxi company apologized to Jingjing’s family and fired Mr. Shi.
