A photo that recently emerged on Weibo looked like something straight out of a horror film—the 8-meter wide West Mengjiangnv River in Xinxiang City in Henan has turned completely blood red and nobody can say for sure what has caused it.

In typical Weibo fashion, the post triggered concern among locals and environmental activists demanding an explanation. According to the Xinxiang City Environmental Monitoring team, no chemical or dying enterprises operate along the banks of the 10 km long river, so for now the only theory is that someone drove to the riverbank in the middle of the night and secretly dumped chemicals into it when no one was watching.

Either that, or some epic battle took place there while the locals slept.

Apart from the junk floating in the river the colour contrasts are quite beautiful. Maybe an amateur photographer put some colour dye in to get just that photo opportunity. Nice!
