Naked Ladies are Becoming a Frequent Sight in Shanghai

Naked Ladies are Becoming a Frequent Sight in Shanghai

Ladies of Shanghai, what is going on with all this public nudity?

After a video of a lady stripping down on the Shanghai metro surfaced online earlier this week, another lady has upped the ante by cruising around the streets of Shanghai completely naked with only the front of a moped protecting her modesty.

The reason for her nudity is still unclear but apparently the naked woman didn’t take kindly to being stopped by police. It was only after some wrestling that they were able to subdue her.

What will it be next, Shanghai? May we suggest participation in the World Nude Bike Ride?

As modest as Chinese women are, it's easy for westerners to get a date in China merely because we are relatively rare. I think "expats in China" is one of the few groups of people where it's pointless to try to shame people on the relationship level. Well, maybe some are lacking on the long-term relationship level, but only the most unappealing of us would be wanting for *naked women* in their lives. Believe me.

Just look at the pic, it's an old ayi. She looks more like someone in distress, in need for help, than a young girl trying to prove something about herself.

Now you know why so many non-Shanghainese Chinese don't have a high opinion of Shanghainese.

Shanghai style, or culture is NOT a stereotype. Just ask any seasoned business person who has decades of experience with Shanghai people as well as Chinese from other regions.

Really? Three naked women spotted publicly in Shanghai is a frequent sight? Three naked women? In a city of 24 million people? Three? In the most populous city in the world we spot THREE naked women in the street? Let's see... that's ONE naked lady per 800,000 inhabitants. 0.0000125% of the population. That's quite frequent, yes indeed. I must go to Shanghai at once to spot the frequent naked women. Lucky me. Who writes these "articles"? Third graders? Even more poignant? Who are your editors? Crack heads or drunkards?

That's a bit OTT, don't you think? By Chinese standards, ths much nudity in such a short time is uncommon. And Shanghai women already have a reptation of being the easiest in the country. These mental cases aren't doing much for their rep. TBH I think the women are far more likely to have a psychological issue that caused them to do this, because indecent exposure isn't normally what you'd expect from excessively modest Chinese women.

Well, if I understand you correctly, my comment is OTT rather than the headline of the "news-breaking" story? Fair enough. And I agree that public displays of nudity in China are aberrations, unlike in the West where nudity is commonly displayed, especially at "Show Us Your Tits" TV moments during American football games, for example. And you're right. Here in China, indecent exposure is probably exacted due to some sort of psychological issue suffered by the protagonist (as you point out), whereas in the West, it's simply an attention-getter. In the final analysis, I wouldn't generalize or make preposterous all-in-one-basket statements based on a few incidents such as the article trumpets. There is undoubtedly way more modesty in Shanghai than there is immodesty.

There's a plethora of real cultural differences as well as racist stereotypes to discuss here, but that isn't really the point. I only found your comment OTT because you called the article writer a crackhead or drunkard. Was that really necessary? It was a lighthearted piece written in good humour, and you hammered it into the ground. I have my fair share of cultural fatigue here in China too, but I can still recognize an unfair value judgement when I see one.

I missed the lightheartedness. I thought it was a serious commentary. Anyway, I don't think the "article" qualifies as news and that's perhaps where I was led astray. I thought the writer's intention was to report the news. Again, if the article was tongue-in-cheek, I missed it. I thought it was an attempt at serious journalism and it appeared to me to be written by a rookie or someone who may have been high - tongue-in-cheek with some sarcasm on my part. In any case, I don't see where culture or race has anything to do with either article or comments. Or value judgments for that matter. It's the shoddy journalism (unless of course it's a joke, but I see nothing funny about unfortunate women caught on camera in the nude) and... perhaps you're reading far too much into my commentary?

"Public nudity is merely an attention-getter" would be the stereotype Chinese like to make of the 'crazy foreigners', anyway, let's not discuss biases and stereotypes. You can't seriously claim that you thought it was an objective news report, after the last sentence: "May we suggest participation in the World Nude Bike Ride?" It's just an amusing report, and I value any news in zhong-wen-dominated China. Holding everything to such high journalistic standards as yours will simply serve to limit my exposure to news. And if you think calling someone a crackhead or drunkard because you don't like what they wrote is just as lighthearted, then we have wildly differing senses of humour. I'd like to respectfully hazard a guess that you're American. Am I right? The few I've met seem to resort to vulgar language too quickly for my taste.

Ha ha! I'd like to respectfully hazard a guess that you're the prat that "penned" the "article" that prompted your little puritanical crusade. Such sensitivity. Ha ha! Anti-American and anti-Chinese, to boot. Go home, little finger-wagging, culturally-fatigued schoolmistress or, failing that, ask your physician to up your daily dosage of meds. Ta ta!

Please don't misinterpret my words. My sole generalization about Americans was: "The few I've met seem to resort to vulgar language too quickly for my taste." I meant it merely to characterize a difference in senses of humour, though I admit it was a disapproving response to mr. "You're a crackhead drunkard and don't forget to take your meds" and his OTT judgements. There is enough media available from the States to back up the fact that American humour is a bit vulgar at times. Although I haven't been there myself, I've met enough Americans, and people who've been to America. Your compatriot may feel I'm anti-American as a result (pulling the discrimination card way too quickly, IMO), but you don't need to justify American modesty with regards to nudity. I only stated that Chinese are excessively modest, but did not imply that anyone else was immodest. As for the news article, yes it displays some level of bias, but I don't think that's enough to hammer it into the ground with accusations of drug abuse. It now appears to be part of your compatriot's 'lighthearted' daily vocabulary, but I find it unwarranted nonetheless.
