Man’s Business Trip to China Ends With Prison

Man’s Business Trip to China Ends With Prison
Oct 23, 2014 By eChinacities.com

A 26 year-old foreigner, by the name Ueda, came to China on a business trip with his father and ended up in prison for sexual harassment.

On October 10, he ate at a seafood restaurant, and following a few drinks, he “lost control” and forced himself onto the waitress, surnamed Zhang, molesting her. Allegedly this is not where his attack ended, as other staff criticised him, and he went on to attack them, too. He also destroyed a chair in the process.

Following a call to the Jinzhou local police around 23:00 on the evening in question, Ueda spent the rest of his time in China (10 days) in prison, and had to pay a 500 RMB fine, probably not how he expected his trip in China to go.

The guy is obviously Japanese and Chinese treats Japanese different for "laowai's". The Japanese are treated as a different set of laowai.

He's a foreigner. That means if you are a foreigner, it could be you or even me as he apparently represents us all lol. Gotta love this "expat" website. I wonder if Chinadaily is running it.

Get ready folks, the checkings and visa tweaks are coming. Either that or some famous fishin place off the coast is about to change flags.

Sick of the generalization of foreigners! Arggh... There should be a new law that requires a specific nationality when speaking about an expat doing anything intolerable in China

As always, there's probably a little bit more to the story - I am guessing possibly some anti-Japanese sentiment (since Ueda happens to be a Japanese name, I know from experience - not the groping part though)! Maybe he was tricked or baited then they turned on him, like a set up. Hypothetically, they could have offered him drink and flirted with him, then upon letting him get a little toasted, start to complain and blame... I/we don't know. We weren't there. The story was too short and simple.

Still, even when it's obvious there is anti-Japanese/foreign sentiment (particularly in the media), it sounds more likely to me like the guy couldn't hold his liquor or was just a dick, than that he got tricked into it. I've seen some weird shit happen when drinking with Japanese friends, and actually wouldn't be surprised if he might just have been oblivious to Chinese/Japanese cultural issues (though the assault part makes this unlikely, too).

What kind of name is Ueda anyway? Must be from central Asia somewhere.

Great... now we will all get painted with the same brush again. I think they should have a stricter punishment on idiots like this...
