Iceland PM to Visit China with Her Wife; Anticipation Over Local Reactions

Iceland PM Johanna Sigurdardottir is scheduled to visit China with her wife, Jonina Leosdottir from April 15-18; a visit that is expected to see a free trade agreement signed between the two countries.

Economic interests aside, many are more interested in speculating on how the visit will be reported in Chinese media, with some netizens wondering whether the PM’s wife, Leosdottir will even be shown on local TV.

Gay marriage is still illegal in China, and the topic is still quite taboo here. Ms Sigurdardottir—the world’s first openly gay Prime Minister—is also reportedly planning to meet with several gay rights groups in China during her visit.
