The 40th session of the World Heritage Committee was held on July 17. Shennongjia, Hubei was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a natural site, making it the 50th Chinese world heritage site.

Shennongjia is in northwestern Hubei province and was established in 1970 by the State Council. The forest has rich and diverse flora and fauna because of its location and climate. It is a habitat for many rare animal species and one of the only three centers of biodiversity in China.

The World Heritage Committee added Shennongjia to its list because of the forest’s unique biology. It is one of the most naturally diverse settings in the world.

Shennongjia has been named as a UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO Global Geopark, and will now be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is the first location in China to be named in all three lists.
