Counterfeited products are readily available throughout China; from DVDs and CDs, to electrical products, jewellery, bags and clothing. Some of them are so good that even the most envious stares won’t be able to tell the difference between an original and a fake.

Anti- counterfeiting organisations, industry union bodies and the labels themselves have been fighting an unsuccessful battle to warn people off purchasing pirated copies. The latest campaign “So Cheap, it’s Criminal” damns the fake products for their exploitation of their workers in sweatshop factories, in an attempt to sway buyers with a moral justification.

The fake markets in Shanghai offer the widest selection of copied goods, and are convenient one-stop shops for buyers. There are two markets in town both euphemistically called the “fashion and gift markets”!

The A P Xinyang Market in Pudong is definitely the better of the two, tucked neatly away inside Science and Technology Museum metro station. The Fashion and Gift Markets at Longhua Temple in Puxi is visited by busloads of tourists, making prices considerably higher and shopkeepers more expectant of a sale. Avoid it, and head out to Pudong instead.

The AP Xinyang Markets is a mini mall within the Science and Technology Museum metro station foyer. It is no Plaza 66 but they have a decent product range with all the classic buys from Longchamp “Le Pliage” Bags to Abercrombie and Fitch hoodies and hard-shell Samsonite suitcases.
