Guangzhou’s Nansha Wetland Park: One for Bird Lovers

Located in the southern-most tip of Guangzhou, Nansha Wetland Park (南沙湿地公园) is a great place to escape the city and embrace true nature. Known as “the kidney of Guangzhou”, Nansha Wetland Park is the city’s first wetland park and serves as a great respite for anyone wanting to escape the pressures of modern life.

Although it may be full of trees and lakes, Nansha Wetland Park is in fact manmade. Due to the climate, mangroves thrive here and help other reeds and water-based flowers and wetland plants to grow. There are also many different colored trees and shrubs to make up a picturesque setting, with the lake area making up one third of the park. Here, many migrant birds gather during the winter, with 141 different species including storks and black and white spoonbills paying the wetlands a visit during the cold months.

A park for all seasons

During the beginning of spring you can spot many new bird’s nests lying in the red and yellow leafed trees as the migratory birds make their way back to the park, which makes for an idyllic scene amid the many surrounding blooming flowers. When the summer comes, visitors can feast their eyes on the water lilies that cover the entire surface of the lake, whilst the winds in autumn will rustle the many trees and reeds around the park, making for a truly serene setting.

Explore the park by boat

Most of Nansha Wetland Park is made up of water, and if you’re not willing to take a boat trip it will take around two hours to walk around the whole area. Boat rental will set you back at 100 RMB per person which may be a little pricey, though it’s the best way to fully experience the charm of the wetlands, and it will get you closer to the many birds and wetland plants.

After taking a boat ride, you’ll arrive at the central reserve where tens of thousands of birds choose to live and feed. Visitors are forbidden to enter the area due to fear of disturbing the birds, though birdwatchers are advised to bring with them a 200mm camera lens for some good photos.

Dining options

Next to the river lies an observation building, where for just 1 RMB, visitors can climb up the top and look out across the whole park from one of the many telescopes. In the afternoon, you can walk on forward to the nearby seafood market located on Shijiutong Haixian Street (十九涌海鲜街), where you can try many reasonably priced local Guangzhou seafood specimens. The market and nearby restaurant get pretty busy during the weekends and holidays, so make sure you get there early before all the food is gone. Seafood aside, there is also a nearby dry goods market, where visitors can purchase fruit among other locally grown products.

Staying the nightView In Map

If you intend to spend the night at Nansha Wetland Park, there’s a nearby five-star hotel where you can stay for 850 RMB a night, though for travelers looking for something cheaper there’s the Jiangnan Inn (江南客栈, 020 3908 0998) which is near the seafood market, as well as the Haifu Holiday Farm (海福度假农庄, 020 8460 9416).
