Life is full of small pleasures: for many, one such pleasure is taking their family out for a meal/snack/treat, having a jolly good knees up in a warm atmosphere surrounded by their loved ones. Here are some of Beijing’s more family friendly eateries.

Cold Stone Creamery 酷圣石View In Map
Cold Stone Creamery is a place to take your little angels when they deserve a treat. This popular American chain of ice-cream parlours is the perfect place to get some of that good old fashioned comfort food, just like back home. Children will like the dazzling array of colourful ice-creams and milkshakes with all options of cones (waffle and chocolate waffle) and toppings. What’s more they can design their own custom made dessert and watch it being made before their very eyes; folded and patted on the cold slab which is presumably the parlours name-sake.

The ice-cream is top quality and up to the standards required of any dessert junkie; richer flavours such as Oreo Overload are so sweet that they can make your teeth itch with sugary sweetness. More health conscious parents will be glad to know that there are healthier options with sorbet and fruit toppings. Prices of a small cone at 28 RMB a trip to Cold Stone won’t break the bank unless you and your offspring have an incredibly sweet tooth and you are hell bent on pigging out to the extreme.

Annie’sView In Map
Annie’s is a mainstay of the western dining scene in Beijing and quite rightly earns praise throughout the expat community. Annie’s has a carved a niche in the capital as a true family oriented restaurant. What earns its status as the perfect venue for a family meal is a combination of family friendly layout, affable and communicative staff, and a good solid menu with plenty of child pleasing dishes available.

The restaurant itself is open plan and has a no smoking section, perfect for middle and larger groups to enjoy. Each branch has a play house play area which is equipped with toys. Staff will also arrange colouring activities for the little ones. Rather than doing their best to ignore children, staff at Annie’s generally try to engage with them, making the dining experience feel as though each member of your party is catered for – a much more personal experience than in many other restaurants. Children are welcome rather than being a seen as a hindrance.

Although Annie’s in not a place for cordon bleu style cuisine, the dishes go down well and they make a good compromise for the Italian food lover, the person needing a Western food fix as well as people with a palate preferring Chinese food. Prices are also very reasonable for the restaurant’s good solid, filling fare.

Papa John’s 棒约翰View In Map
Papa John’s has a number of branches across town in convenient locations. The restaurant is commonly laid out with booths which are suitable for getting the clan around one cosy table. Pizzas are above the standard of cheaper fast food joints and closer to what might be considered authentic, although they don’t quite reach the high standards of some of the specialist Italian restaurants. The large pizzas are exactly that: very large. They are also comparatively inexpensive. Papa Johns also boasts a respectable drinks and desserts menu.

The various branches of Papa Johns have a nice atmosphere and a slightly classier feel than other restaurants in the same bracket. One of the things that sets Papa John’s apart from other eateries aimed at the family market is the fact that restaurants organise “Little Papa” pizza making classes, perfect for birthday parties and special occasions involving a large number of little ones. All in all Papa Johns is reasonably priced and a safe bet for a family meal.

Peppes Pizza 派乐仕比萨View In Map
Located in Sanlitun Village, Peppes Pizza is another Italian restaurant aimed at the family crowd. Although not renowned for its excellent food Peppes is fairly reasonably priced and is at a cool, cosmopolitan and accessible downtown location –perfect after an afternoon shopping or an excursion to the movies in The Village. The main draw at Peppes is that fact that its second floor has an amply sized and well equipped children’s play area. A space where children can safely wander off to and play, but remain under a watchful eye, is conductive to enjoying a relaxed meal with friends. Peppes play area also makes it as suitable venue for children’s parties where parents may like to indulge themselves too
