Dongao Island: A Treasure Hunt to the Bottom of the Sea

Not quite five meters square, Dongao Island is situated at the mouth of the Pearl River, southeast of Zhuhai, in an area called Lingding Sea.

Reasons to go to Dongao Island

1)  The island is over 80% forest and there are great opportunities to go scuba diving with your own personal instructor. You can search for long lost treasure at the bottom of the sea.

2)  Dongao Island has a wonderful natural spring on the top of its largest mountain. Many newlyweds go there because, according to local folklore, the water is good for fertility. Several women claim to have given birth to twins after drinking the spring water.

3)  Dongao Island is a perfect place for sunbathing and the waves are just right for surfing. 

Getting there

Starting from Guangzhou, take long distance bus to Zhuhai Gongbei Bus Station and then take a taxi to the Xiangzhou Beidi Port. Ferryboats heading to Dong’ao Island leaves at 9:00 am in the morning and 2:00 pm in the afternoon. It takes about 45 minutes to get there.

Where to Stay

At the Dongao Resort, Dongao Green Hotel, and Yacht Club rooms range from 208 to 438 RMB/day. Room rates include the cost of the round trip ferry. Tents are 100 RMB/night. The island's northeastern corner is best for camping.

What to Eat

The seafood here is all freshly caught. You can rent your own grill for 30 RMB and cook out on the beach. Scallops are just 15 RMB/lb.
