City of Cha: 3 Must-Visit Teahouses in Chengdu

Let's play a little China trivia. Category: Food and Drinks. Level: Ridiculously Easy. Question: Most famous Chinese beverage?  Thirty seconds on the clock. Go! Tea, the national drink par excellence, has it all: a long and interesting history, amazing and varied tastes, and it's great for you.

Take a break from the coffee chains in Chengdu and try this healthier drink in a way cooler setting. Teahouses, with their bamboo chairs, small square tables, and copper kettles are worth visiting for the atmosphere, history and of course, the delicious tea. Here are the three best teahouses in Chengdu.

1) The social teahouse: Heming Teahouse View In Map
Heming Teahouse (鹤鸣茶社) has been a Chengdu staple for over a hundred years. Located in People's Park, the tranquil teahouse is packed with tables, chairs and tea enthusiasts, and features outside seating near the lake. The tea selection is diverse, with the cheapest packets priced at 15 RMB and the most expensive at 25 RMB. The tea comes with a giant thermos of hot water that can be refilled as many times as you like.

An old man wearing pink pants and a green shirt may come up to you and begin performing acrobatic tricks; don't be alarmed, he is a unique staple of the teahouse. Tea-drinkers can also opt to get their ears cleaned out (for a couple extra Yuan) while relaxing at the teahouse. Seats are often hard to find at this popular establishment, so come early and spend the day.
