Animal loving netizens are up in arms after a video emerged showing panda handlers in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, allegedly abusing cubs.
The video, taken at the famed Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in July, went viral this week. It appears to show staff members dragging and throwing energetic cubs as they try to escape their pen.
Chinese netizens have raised concerns, with some accusing the center of animal cruelty.
The facility pointed out that panda cubs are strong and can be violent, but ultimately criticized the actions of the workers and promised to re-educate them, state media Xinhua reports.
However, Guo Jingpeng, one of the panda keepers in the video, defended his actions, saying he was pushing the bear away out of “instinct” as it had bitten him during feeding.
The giant panda is a highly protected species and considered a symbol of China.
