China’s Top Shopping Bazaar: Shenyang Wu Ai Market

If bargain shopping is what you’re in the mood for then there’s simply no better place than Wu Ai Market (五爱市场) in Shenyang. Wu Ai Market is not only one of the largest wholesale markets in the region, but it is also one of the biggest economic zones in North-East Asia. Wu Ai Market was founded in June 1983 at Wu Ai Street in Shenhe District, which is how it got its name. The largest international trade centre in North China, Wu Ai’s turnover and influence is unrivalled. As a major distributor of clothes, accessories, make-up, knit goods, small household appliances and more, Wu Ai enjoys an annual profit of over 30 million USD as well as a well earned reputation as one of China’s top shopping bazaars.

Shenyang Wuai Market

Conveniently located in the heart of the city, the market is within easy reach of the city’s main transport hubs, such as the South Train Station and 12 bus lines currently stop at the market. Virtually every taxi driver in the city knows it so trying to find it shouldn’t pose any problems. The goods themselves are sold at very low prices, though bargaining is required. If you can speak some Chinese, then this is a great place to brush up on your bargaining skills, otherwise a calculator and smile should also guarantee some great bargains. Also remember that while this is a great market for buying ultra cheap goods, you do often pay for what you get. Besides the usual stock of clothes, shoes, bags and so on, the market also sells random items like Christmas decorations, souvenirs, books, cards, toys etc.

The market is comprised of several buildings, including the Wu Ai Clothing Town, the textile, bags and shoes market, as well as the Wu Ai South, West and East sections. The Clothing Town occupies a staggering 17,000 square metres of floor space alone, so you certainly won’t be lacking choice here. The enormous market serves an area of over 10,000 square kilometers including Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia and Hebei and supplies over 200 million people in North China. Moreover, the market has exclusive production bases in Liaoning, Zhejiang and Guangdong to meet consumers’ growing demand for goods. Besides catering to the Chinese market, Wu Ai is also one of the main suppliers of goods to Eastern European countries like Russia, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary etc.

A truly international bazaar that caters to so many people, you’re bound to find something here.
