There are over 39,000 illegal Chinese immigrants in the United States ready to be deported back to China, but China has been slow on the paperwork needed to accept them.

When China does not need the necessary paperwork, the United States has no choice but to let the illegal immigrants go and keep their names in the system for possible future deportation. Some have been in the United States, waiting to be deported, for over 10 years.

In early June, China finally began to take the steps to begin the paperwork needed to deport the immigrants from the United States, according to British media.

A Reuters article published September 11 reported that in one case, China failed to provide the necessary paperwork and the illegal immigrants were released after three months. The article also stated that 900 of the 39,000 illegal immigrants are violent offenders.

The issue may add to increasing tensions between China and the United States, and might be brought up during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington later this month.

China has also urged the United States to repatriate corrupt Chinese fugitive officials as part of Operation Fox Hunt.
