According to a recent report by the Asian Development Bank, Chengdu is the most livable city in mainland China. The assessment is based on the Environmental Livability Index which rates the quality of urban environment, water resources, air quality and waste management.

Guangzhou and Ningbo were ranked second and third, whilst Beijing and Shanghai were ranked 18th and 22nd respectively: Lanzhou, Harbin and Taiyuan were ranked last.

South China fared far better than the North in the survey particularly the poorer North Western cities. However, the survey acknowledged that all the cities need to address problems of air and water pollution, as well as water and waste management.
