Surely Beijing’s police force has more than enough crime stories to talk about on their official Sina Weibo account. However, one very sharp-eyed netizen caught the police red handed trying to pass off a 2006 prostitution bust as a recent news story.
On August 31, the official police account “平安北京” posted a microblog whose wording and images was identical to a blog posted in 2006. The post claimed that the Beijing Public Security Team and the Changping public security branch jointly bust a prostitution ring in Dongsanqi Village, Beiqijia Township in Changping District, arresting 31 sex workers aged between 40 and 55. They also bust three brothels posing as salons, the post claimed.
According to a netizen, that very story was posted on the Qianlong website on June 26, 2006 with the title “More than 30 Sex Workers Arrested in Changping Street Prostitution Bust”. The number of people arrested, the wording and the photo are almost identical to the most recent post. Upon discovering the seemingly fake post, netizens were quick to demand a comment and explanation from the police authorities. However, no comment or official statement has been released so far and the post seems to have magically disappeared from their Weibo account.
