Chinese Seismological Network falsely reported a 6.9 earthquake in Jiujiang, Xunyang, Jiangxi. The earthquake was reported on January 4 at 14:30. The official message quickly spread around the internet, but several Netizens in Jiujiang said they did not feel the earthquake. China Seismological Network quickly issued a statement saying that the earthquake did not happen.
The organization said in their statement that the seismic information had been automatically entered into their system. After manual verification, it was found that the information was untrue. They apologized to Netizens for the scare.
China Earthquake Network Center’s Wang Linlin said that the China Seismological Network had apologized to the center for the release of false information. CENC has a cooperative relationship with several organizations, and earthquake announcements are published automatically through a number of channels in order to reduce damage. Wang said that to her knowledge, the message on the 4th was “originally a systems test,” was not meant to be released to the public.
