When I first arrived in China, it was always curious to me when I taught that the kids did eye exercises. Without fail, every two classes or so, the kids would have to do their eye exercises to a recording on the loudspeaker with the voice of a child instructing and counting to soothing music.

I have to admit I found it a bit odd at first and I sat there at my desk watching the kids peacefully and methodically rubbing their eyes. There was always a designated kid who got the enjoyment of walking around with a stick making sure everyone was participating. Being the seven year olds that they were, they always tried to abuse this privilege and I had to keep them from poking the other kids.

The Chinese have always been good with medicine and centuries old beliefs about acupuncture and acupressure so I don’t know why I was skeptical about the eye exercises. They are said to reduce stress and strain on the eyes and so I figured I would try it myself. My weary eyes were literally wilting and I was read to try anything. So, I followed along with the kids. Wow-brilliant! I highly recommend them and they only take a few minutes to do. If it works for the other billion people in China it could work for you too. You can check eHow’s page for instructions here, so go for it!
