2013 saw another year filled with weird and wonderful stories coming out of China. From public nudity to foreigners begging on public buses, the year of the snake had it all. Let’s take a look back at eChinacities’ top 10 Weird China News stories of 2013, determined by most read by you, the readers.

10) Naked Woman Spotted on Wuhan Subway
In May this year there a woman in Wuhan caused a stir while riding the metro playing on her iPad. That’s not that weird, people do that every day! True, but most don’t do it in the nude (well not in public anyway), while shouting profanities at no one in particular. The metal metro seat must have been freezing!

9) Guangxi Bride Enters Wrong Bed, “Accidently” Has Sex With Best Man
One of the better cover ups We’ve ever heard about for infidelity. A bride in Gaunxi, on her wedding night, went to the bathroom in a small house in a rural village, and on her way back to bed entered the ‘wrong room’ and had relations with the best man instead of the groom. The bride later accused the best man of raping her, but he was absolved of guilt in court.

8) Naked Smoking 6-Year-Old Girl Spotted Begging on Nanjing Street
A rather sad story came out of Nanjing this year. Photos of a 6 year old girl made huge waves on Weibo back in July, as she was shown, naked, smoking a cigarette and begging. When a reporter tried to help, her dad stepped in and said that he didn’t need help and wasn’t breaking the law.

7) Foreigner Spotted Begging on Changsha Bus
In spring of 2013 a man became famous on Weibo as, ‘the foreigner who begs on the bus.’ One morning in May a netizen posted a picture of a foreign man begging on a public bus using a sign saying that he lost his wallet and needed 20 RMB. Later that day, however, he was spotted again with the same sign. It turns out he had been doing this for quite some time.

6) Shenzhen Nurse Dies after Harrowing Elevator Accident
Another sad story that featured on our website in 2013, this time coming out of Shenzhen: A nurse, named Wang, had a horrific encounter with a faulty elevator. While descending from the 16th floor the elevators doors opened at the third floor unexpectedly. When Miss Wang tried to exit, the door closed on her, trapping her before the elevator descended again leading to her tragic death.

5) Photos of Female Math Teacher Teaching in Underwear Go Viral
The unofficial ‘sexiest teacher in China’, Miss Zhu, was photographed teaching her math class, in her underwear. We’re not sure whether it was due to the heat or to keep her students attention, but either way we think she was successful.

4) Sanya Sex Party Scandal: Chinese Celebs Say They're Too Rich to Need to Sell Sex
Early in 2013 the Shanghai Daily newspaper did an exposé on the alleged sex parties that take place in Sanya involving many of China’s rich and famous. The celebs came out in their own defense, saying they are ‘too rich to need to sell sex’. After taking to Weibo to prove their wealth, they were the target of backlash from netizens who said that their proof highlights the huge rich-poor gap existent in China.

3) 19 Year Old University Student Under Fire for Posting Photos of Abortion Online
In September a young university student became internet-famous after she posted pictures of an ultrasound of an abortion she had on Chinese social media site, Renren. 19 year old, Miss Yang, didn’t think her post would spread that quickly and said she did it purely so that she would have a memory of the life changing event.

2) Woman Takes Outdoor Nude Photos Along Bund And Throughout Shanghai
The first photos to surface were of the young woman posing scantily clad and then nude on Hangshan Road in Shanghai. However, she didn’t stop there as more pictures emerged of her at various Shanghai landmarks, including the Bund and Xintiandi.

1) Hairy “Anti-Pervert” Stockings Trending this Summer
And the award for the most read Weird China News story of 2013 goes to the ‘anti-pervert’ stockings story from last summer. A woman shared a picture of herself wearing the now-famous stockings on Weibo which then went viral. The stockings make the wearer look like they have absurdly hairy legs, which serves as a defense mechanism to ward off unwanted attention.
