Macao is set to allow select foreigners from mainland China to enter the special administrative region for the first time since the COVID-19 lockdown, Xinhua reports. Starting on December 1, foreigners who are not permanent residents of mainland China, Hong Kong or Taiwan can enter Macao from China as long as they have stayed on the mainland for at least 14 consecutive days.

Macau to grant entry to foreigners

The announcement, made by Macau’s Coronavirus Response and Coordination Center on Monday, instructed eligible foreigners to send an application to the region’s health authorities for approval. The authorities will then decide whether or not to grant access on a case-by-case basis.

Eligible foreigners include:

-Resident permit holders
-Holders of non-resident work permits and other work permits
-Family members of work permit holders who have stay permits
-Those accepted to Macau universities and colleges
-Those coming to Macau for important business, academic or professional purposes

As of Monday this week, Macau had no community transmission of COVID-19, no confirmed local cases for 225 days and no imported cases for 136 days.
