Editor’s Note: A heated incident in Beijing has made international headlines this week. An executive from German auto-maker Daimler (which owns Mercedes-Benz) was fired after yelling “All Chinese are bastards!” during an argument over a parking spot in Shunyi district.

A senior Daimler Trucks and Buses executive was removed from his position on Monday after he lost his temper during a parking dispute in Beijing. He was accused by the other car owner of yelling racial insults.

A Weibo user posted that Rainer Gaertner, the president of Daimler Trucks and Buses Limited, had yelled the insult after an argument over a parking spot on Sunday in Shunyi District, Beijing. The user said that a Chinese driver had been backing into a parking space when Gaertner, driving a black Mercedes Benz R-Class, came up from behind and stole the spot.

The Chinese driver protested being cut off. Gaertner replied loudly, “I am in China one year already. The first thing I learned here is: All you Chinese are bastards.” Gaertner is also accused of using pepper spray on the Chinese driver and the onlookers at the scene. The Chinese driver was very angry, and said that he plans to take legal action against Gaertner.

Rainer Gaertner is an executive of Daimler, which is the parent company of Mercedes-Benz. He lives in a villa in Shunyi’s River Garden complex.

Beijing police reported that on November 20, Shunyi police received an alarm- that two drivers were having a heated dispute over a parking spot. Police arrived on the scene shortly after.

A representative from Daimler China told press that a member of the company had recently gotten into a personal dispute, and that the matter was a personal incident. The company claimed the police investigation had ended, and the two sides had reached a settlement privately.

Daimler released a statement on the incident on Monday:

"The nature of the dispute and in particular the manner in which it was conducted, irrespective of any comments alleged to have been made, is adjudged to be not only of concern to the public but viewed by us as detrimental to the standing of our company, unbecoming of a manager of our brand and prejudicial to our good name.”

"Such an incident reflects in no way the values of Daimler AG and we sincerely apologize for the concerns raised by this matter and the views that people have felt obliged to express following the reports of this regrettable matter".

Daimler also stated that Gaertner had been “relieved of his position,” following the incident. The company has not commented on the alleged use of pepper-spray during the altercation.
