A cup of wine, under the flowering trees;
I drink alone, for no friend is near.
Raising my cup I beckon the bright moon,
For her, with my shadow, will make three people.
-Drinking Alone by Moonlight, Li Bai
Luckily for the locals of Chengdu, we seldom have to drink alone; but like Li Bai of old, we certainly enjoy getting our drink on under the canopy of the night sky, cloud covered though it may be. So let’s all raise our glass to the moon, even if we can’t see it, in Chengdu’s top places for outdoor drinking.
Shamrock Bar三叶草爱尔兰西餐酒吧View In Map
These days, with the World Cup in full swing, you’re hard pressed to find a seat either outside or inside. But the outside seating is ample, and as probably the most popular Anglophonic hangout in Chengdu, you’ll never be at a loss for someone to toast with. Currently, weather-permitting, they have a large screen set up for the game out on the patio, as well as several inside. When not in the midst of football frenzy, Shamrock’s will often play host to one of Chengdu’s several homespun expat bands or popular local Chengdu groups like the Boss Ma Band. There’s even a crazy guy who practices his Elvis on unsuspecting travelers.

The Hemp House麻糖酒吧 View In Map
One of the greatest things about the Hemp House has always been its relaxed atmosphere. The second floor patio at the Hemp House is one of the best places in Chengdu to chill out. It’s one of the most spacious outdoor drinking areas in Chengdu, and the fact that it’s a balcony instead of a sidewalk means you are at least a little bit separated from the Chengdu traffic.

Jah Bar家吧 View In Map
Actually, all of the bars in that little strip across from the big boat have a bit of outdoor seating, but the Jah Bar stands head and shoulders above the others because of atmosphere, when they’re not competing with the noise from next door. If impromptu jam sessions are going to happen in Chengdu, this is where they will be – consider yourself warned.

Le Cafe Panam(e) and JellyfishView In Map
Paname and Jellyfish get grouped together because they are next-door neighbors and they share the outdoor drinking area with each other. The outdoor space really is limited, and on sweet summer weekends the balcony shared by these two establishments is usually overflowing to the point where you question its structural integrity. Paname is the established local favourite among the Francophone community, and Jellyfish is the new up-and-comer with a bartender who knows how to make a proper Long Island Iced Tea.

Paulaner Brauhaus at the Kempinski普拉那啤酒坊 View In Map
Practically under the bridge at Renmin Nan Lu and Second Ring Road, Paulaner is more of a summertime favourite for the wealthy Chinese in Chengdu than for the foreigners. Still, if you’re wallet is fat enough, there is no better place to enjoy an ice cold microbrew and a plate of Bavarian sausage.

SalutView In Map
Also a restaurant, Salut is a great place to relax with some delicious sangria and tapas. They used to have live music on Thursdays, although the last time I was there I had to pick up the guitar myself. Luckily for all concerned I put it back down again. When you’re by the river and in the mood for some nice patio seating with Spanish atmosphere, then Salut is the place to go.

Now we are drunk, each goes their way.
May we long share our eternal friendship,
And meet at last on the Cloudy River of the sky
Enjoy the summertime months in Chengdu, make sure you spend as much time as you can under the night sky, and remember to raise a glass to our eternal friends Li Bai, the moon, and our shadow.
