Dancing in the Moonlight

Dancing in the Moonlight

I don't know why I always think Van Morrison did this song, but he never did.  It was originally done by King Harvest in 1972 and then Toploader did a cover version in 2000.

Anyway, you will have either version (depending on your age) playing in your head when you walk down the streets of China - or one of four Dancing in the Street versions.  Remember the famous Bowie/Jagger duo?!

I passed two groups of fitness dancers on my walk to pick up some fruit supplies in down-town Nanxun on Tuesday evening.

So this is how it works:

  1. Find a park, public square (or any street corner if you live in Nanxun)
  2. Head towards the loud music blaring over a portable CD player
  3. If you are a proficient dancer, slot in at the front
  4. If you are one of the best dancers, slot into the centre
  5. If you are a beginner, join the back row and follow the moves of the dancers in front

It is FREE!

It looks like FUN!

It is a great way to keep FIT!

It would seem that the older folk do the Tai Chi - male and female - and mostly in the mornings.  The fitness dancing seems to be predominantly middle-aged females - and takes place mostly in the evenings.

I think I might just give it a bash when I relocate to Shanghai.

But there is always Bootcamp, which I am quite excited about.  I have always enjoyed this form of  exercise and have participated in various camps in Cape Town in the past.  They meet all over the city here in Shanghai at different times throughout the day - early morning, mid-morning and evenings.  There is a camp that meets every Monday and Thursday evening at 19h00 at the entrance to People's Park.  I am crossing my fingers that this location is going to fit in with my work schedule.
