The Perfect Valentine’s: Edible Gifts, Dinners, Events

Valentine's Day has crept upon us once again and as always, Beijing's hotels and international restaurants are gearing up for the big day. If you're planning to do something special for your significant other, maybe this round-up of dining, events and treats will give you some ideas on how to spend the perfect day of "love".

Not everyone likes the idea of forking out over 1000 RMB to eat at a fancy restaurant hotel just so they can say they did something "special" on Valentine's Day. A gesture just as thoughtful, if not even more romantic, is getting your significant other a hamper with all his/her favourite treats, which you can enjoy in each other's company from the comforts of your home. Obviously DIY is the best option and you can easily pick up a basket at a florist for a couple of kuai and fill it up with your loved one's favourite treats. But if you're the lazy or unimaginative type, you can always buy a pre-made hamper from the Westin for, brace yourself, 1,288 RMB (call 66297812 to reserve one). There better be diamond encrusted cookies in that hamper!

Alternatively, why not treat your loved one to some of the best cakes in Beijing? Since its launch, Divina Cakes has been enjoying nothing but positive reviews for their mouth-watering selection of Italian cakes. As authentic as if right out of an Italian grandmother's oven, Divina's cakes aren't cheap, but they're not too expensive for that special occasion which only comes around once a year. Browse and order cakes through their website divinacakes.com, but be warned: drooling is very likely.

Or why not make your own chocolates? At DIY Chocolate in Xidan Culture Square you can do just that. Customers can choose from one of many moulds to shape the chocolate and personal touches like pictures and words can also be added.

2)  The Dinners
But if you can't resist the temptation of going to a restaurant with an overpriced Valentine's menu, rather than say, cook yourself, here are some options: If you want to go ALL out, then head to the Westin in Financial Street where you can get a five course meal, champagne, 99 roses, a 90-minute massage for two, a personal violinist, a limousine ride and one night at the Westin for 6,999 RMB – ouch!

More moderate options include a 388 RMB (per person) three course meal at Terra. This also includes a glass of bubbly. Call 65919148 to make reservations. Or for 428 RMB, diners can indulge in a four course meal at Salt, which also includes a glass of bubbly or Rossini.

Finally, if you're going to spend that much, you might as well be able to choose how much you can eat, right? A buffet dinner is the perfect solution. Aroma at the Ritz-Carlton on 83 Jianguo Lu, is offering an international buffet that includes a free flow of soft drinks, local beer and house wine. Diners will also be treated to a glass of Champagne, a picture plus picture frame, a rose and chocolates. All this can be had for 1,288 RMB (plus surcharge) per couple. Call 5908 8161 to reserve.

3)  Go out and do something!
Valentine's Day may fall on a Tuesday this year, but that shouldn't deter your youthful spirit from going out. If you're leaning towards alcohol aided fun, why not check out of the many nightlife options that night: Q Bar will be crafting a number or delicious love themed cocktails as well as complimentary chocolate mousse cake from 18:00 to late. For a bit more action, check out Haze's Valentine's Party which features Kaize, Yang Bing, Da Bing and Donald Summer on the decks. Oh, and then there's always Avril. Tickets available here.
