Interview: Finnish Metal Legends Apocalyptica Talk China, Food and Girls

What do you get when you mix hard rock and metal with a few bad-ass cello players? The answer: Finnish cello-metal band Apocalyptica. From their break out cover album Plays Metallica by Four Cellos to the newest 7th Symphony, the band has rocked out around the world and worked with many rock greats including Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace, Gavin Rossdale of Bush and Dave Lombardo of Slayer. The boys in the band mix some serious rock with light-hearted antics: they allegedly recorded their entire latest album while totally nude! Next on the band’s list: China. Apocalyptica will rock the walls of epic Chinese venues including Beijing’s Yugong Yishan and Shanghai’s MAO House Live in their first Chinese tour. We had the chance to ask the band a few questions about playing in China, Chinese music and more.

eChinacities: First of all, why China? How did the China leg of the 7th Symphony tour come about?

Apocalyptica: We were looking for a possibility to play in China for a long time and finally found a promoter to book the tour. We are very excited to come to China and play concerts for Chinese audiences.

eC: What is your perception of the Chinese rock and metal scene, how do you think your music will be received by Chinese fans?

A: We honestly do not know too much about the rock scene in China but are very excited to see how it is! We expect Chinese audiences to like Apocalyptica in concert as Chinese people are very passionate and we play very intense music.

eC: What do you want to do, see and taste while in Beijing and Shanghai?

A: We would like to see some historical places, street-life and food markets. We know the Chinese food we have in Finland is not the same as in Shanghai or Peking, so we’re looking forward to some exciting culinary experiences.

eC: What’s the first word that comes to mind when thinking about:

eC: Beijing
A: Massive city, The Great Wall, temples.

eC: Shanghai
A: Hectic city-rhythm, street-life.

eC: Chinese Music
A: Chinese Opera, Snakedance, Chinese Carnival.

eC: Chinese Food
A: Healthy, tasty, spicy and exciting

eC: Chinese Girls
A: We haven’t had any experiences with Chinese girls… ;-)
