Beijing is an enormously populated city with a cheese culture that not so long ago was almost non-existent. While Chinese culinary history dates back thousands of years, cheese has yet to win the hearts of the Chinese masses, making it a scarce commodity in Beijing. However, a rising number of expatriates as well as Chinese nationals who have lived or traveled overseas have inherited a liking for cheese; so slowly but surely it is making its way to the Chinese market. Meaning the cheese maker of Beijing, Le Fromager de Pekin specializes in making French artisan cheeses. Insisting on the best quality, all equipment and cultures are imported from France to ensure a similar process; while some variations can’t be avoided, most of the cheese is very near an exact replica of the taste and texture you find in familiar French cheeses. Grocery stores and supermarkets
There are also a few grocery stores and markets in Beijing with a decent cheese selection. Though it may not impress the cheese connoisseur, it will certainly cure the cheese craving.
